Alternative energy, sometimes referred
to as renewable energy, is generally defined as energy from non-fossil-fuel sources. Categories include solar,
ethanol/grain-based, ethanol/non-grain, biodiesel, geothermal, and wind. Note that we have excluded some of the
industry's giants such as General Electric Company and Chevron Corporation,
because alternative energy represents only a minor percentage of their
overall business. Valuation work for alternative energy
stocks is generally based on relatively crude metrics, reflecting the fact
that most of these companies are in early stages of their life cycles and
have not yet demonstrated sustained profitability. A simple ratio of market capitalization to
annualized last-quarter sales would show that most of the solar photovoltaics stocks sport extraordinary high valuations
